All travel to North Korea must be arranged through a state-approved tour operator. Independent travel is not permitted. The tour operator will typically handle the visa application process on behalf of the traveler. Visa approval is not guaranteed and can be denied without explanation. Direct consular contact for visa applications is rare; the process is almost exclusively managed via authorized tour agencies. Costs for the visa itself are usually bundled into the tour package, making a separate 'cost' figure difficult to ascertain. Processing times and validity are also highly dependent on the specific tour and itinerary approved by the North Korean authorities.
