Japanese citizens are eligible for the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) and must obtain an approved Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) prior to travel. An ESTA is generally valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first, and allows for multiple entries. Each stay under ESTA cannot exceed 90 days. If the purpose of travel is not covered by the VWP (e.g., study, employment, or stays longer than 90 days), a traditional visa is required.
